Product Review: Michael Todd True Organics Skin Care

Months ago I received a gift from a friend who knows I love organic skin care products. It was a discovery kit from Michael Todd Organics, and I was super excited to try it. The kit contained mini sizes of products specific for your skin type, but it looks like they’ve redesigned the kits so the one I have is no longer available in this exact configuration. There is quite a bit of buzz on Youtube about these products, and I’ve also seen several Living Social and Groupon deals for them.

Before I get started with the review, I want to mention one thing about this company. While they do use some organic ingredients, these products are not USDA certified organic. Some of you are looking for true organic products, and if that’s the case, you won’t find it with Michael Todd. I still think the products are a MUCH safer option than most commercial skin care products, but they do still use ingredients like phenoxyethanol (which is banned in Japan) and sodium benzoate, which are man-made chemical preservatives. Just wanted to throw that out there….

Honey and Oat

So, the first product I tried was the Honey and Oat Gentle Deep Pore Cleanser. By now you know that I’m in love with Nutriganics Foaming Face Wash from The Body Shop and I’m probably on my 20th bottle of the stuff, so it takes a lot for me to start using a different face wash. I will say this product is quite nice. It’s fairly concentrated so a little goes a long way, and it produces a slight lather (not quite as much as I like, but still good) which makes it easy to work all the makeup off your skin. The scent is mild and very lovely, with a slight citrus aroma. It did a great job of removing all of my makeup (I did the cotton pad test afterward to check) without making my skin feel stripped or dry. A nice product, indeed!

Citrus Cream

Next up is the Citrus Cream Moisturizer, which is truly delightful. This one smells of fresh orange blossoms, which pretty much makes my mouth water. It’s 81% organic and gluten-free, and contains hyaluronic acid, which is one of my favorite ingredients for super-charged moisture. It’s light and absorbs quickly, and provides long-lasting moisture. Nothing I didn’t like about this one!

pum

My kit also included the Pumpkin Mask, which reminds me very much of my beloved Incredible Pumpkin Peel from Mychelle. It’s dark orange and has a true pumpkin scent. This product is intended to give you a mild chemical exfoliation. It’s not as strong as the Mychelle product, which is great if you have more sensitive skin, but for me it wasn’t as effective. The regular price is $34 for 3.4 oz, which makes it more cost effective than the Mychelle product. I liked it, but didn’t notice any incredible difference in my skin after using it.

One of my favorites was the Blue Green Algae Toner. I don’t have a photo because I used it up and recycled the bottle already. It has a very strong but relaxing lavender scent, which I really love. It doesn’t sting or burn your face like some toners can, and I love that it has antibacterial properties to fight off blackheads and blemishes. The hyaluronic acid prevents it from over drying your skin. LOVE it!

The last product was the Jojoba Charcoal facial scrub, which was probably my least favorite of the bunch. It’s intended to be a polishing scrub to remove dead skin, but to me, the little beads were almost too gentle to do anything. If you do have sensitive skin, however, this might be enough for you, as the charcoal does have a deep cleansing and detoxifying effect which can give you a mild exfoliation without being too harsh. I personally prefer a scrub like the Acure Organics Brightening Facial Scrub ($11.99 at Vitacost), which feels more like a microdermabrasion and really leaves my skin silky and smooth.

So that wraps up my review of the Michael Todd True Organics products that I tried. Here’s what I like about this company’s products:

  • Contain a lot of certified organic ingredients
  • Everything smells lovely
  • Manufactured in the U.S.A.
  • Many vegan and gluten-free products
  • Cruelty free
  • Reasonably priced
  • Lots of options for different skin types

I will definitely keep an eye out for Living Social deals and would buy some of these products again. I also saw that you can shop through their Pinterest board for 20% off, which is awesome. You can get an entire full-sized skin care regimen for whatever skin type you have for $68 shipped to your door. I don’t know how long this will apply, so try it out now if you’re interested in checking out these products for yourself.
